Horizons By Matthias Hillner

April 14 - May 2, 2008

Matthias Hillner's 'Horizons' series is a range of lenticular prints which are inspired by visual poems created by Stéphane Mallarmé and Guillaume Apollinaire. Hillner also studied Eugen Gomringer's concrete poetry from the 1960s to explore which form visual poetry could take on today.

The texts shown on the prints are Hillner's philosophical reflections on urban environments. They are written with a specifically designed 3D typeface called 'Cubico' the use of which is exclusive to Hillner's Studio for Virtual Typography. The 3D font in combination with lenticular printing methods allows for the animation of the typographic pattern. Depending on the viewing angle the legibility of texts varies. The letters dissolve into illegible graphic patterns as the viewer
passes by.

The background images feature details of buildings found in London, Paris and Munich. By photographing the architectures at close proximity with wide angle lenses Hillner turned the vertical panes into artificial landscapes. The languages chosen for the texts are tributes to the locations where the buildings were photographed.
